Cambridge City Council

Cambridge City Council owns the Park Street site and has operated the site as a public car park since the 1960s and will continue to do so moving forwards.

Cambridge City Council selected Marick Real Estate as the Developer to redevelop the Park Street multi-storey car park in the city centre. Marick and Cambridge City Council have worked very closely together since early 2019 in developing this scheme.

Marick and Gilbert-Ash are working to build the new car park to the council’s specifications which were provided to Marick in 2019. Marick has been working with the Council in developing this design and the layouts.

The Council will retain the ownership of the car park site (including the hotel) and will manage and operate the public car park upon completion.

Staycity

Marick has partnered with the operator, Staycity Group (“Staycity”) is the leading independent Aparthotel operator in Ireland, the UK and Europe:

  • Staycity currently operates 3,000 rooms across 20 locations;
  • The company launched the Wilde Aparthotel brand in March 2018 in central London; with other locations currently in development;
  • Staycity has identified Cambridge as one of their key UK locations;
  • This Aparthotel is a Premium brand which is looking to attract leisure and business guests who will enjoy the City’s many cultural and historic attractions as well as its restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops, and businesses.

Gilbert-Ash

Gilbert-Ash is Employed by Marick as the Main Contractor, which involves the overseeing and managing the procurement, logistics and construction of the entire Park Street redevelopment.

Gilbert-Ash is an experienced and prize winning contractor (Sterling Prize winner, and shortlisted four times for the Sterling Prize). With 190 employees and a strong financial covenant Gilbert-Ash is an innovative and results driven construction partner, headquartered in the UK.

Gilbert-Ash has extensive experience of working on challenging engineering projects, deep basements, ground condition management, archaeology and delivery of hotels.

Gilbert-Ash has a good track record working in Cambridge, with a recent project with Jesus College (involving basement construction and archaeology) and a recently completed high quality Aparthotel scheme in North Cambridge.

Gilbert-Ash will have an ongoing site management presence throughout the works and will be the main point of contact for local stakeholders.

There is a community engagement strategy initially led by Marick, which Gilbert-Ash will take forwards with Marick in close support.

John F Hunt

The name John F Hunt was first established in the 1930’s as a Blacksmiths under the name Joseph Hunt & Sons of Diss Street, Hackney. The Company continued to develop and trade quite successfully as Fabricators & Engineers until the early 1980’s when recession took its toll.

John F Hunt Demolition was formed by John Hall in 1982 primarily concentrating on Demolition & Industrial Dismantling, growing rapidly to become one of the leading demolition contractors in the UK today.

Since the late 1980’s John F Hunt Demolition expanded operations to encompass many related activities such as Robotic Demolition, Temporary Works, Civil Engineering and Pre Construction Advice. The Demolition division now sits alongside the Asbestos Removal and Concrete Cutting divisions under the main company, John F Hunt Ltd.

John F Hunt is undertaking the demolition and ground works on Park Street.

Dexter Moren Associates has been engaged by Marick as the project Architect. Moving forwards Dexter Moren Associates will be working closely with Gilbert-Ash on developing the Construction design and information.

Hoare Lea was engaged by Marick in 2019 to provide initial Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEPH) advice as well as Air Quality reporting and Sustainability calculations and reporting. Hoare Lea has designed and provided Marick’s Employer’s Requirements for Gilbert-Ash in this regard.

Hoare Lea will be retained to monitor the delivery of the MEPH and Sustainability on behalf of Marick.

Point2 Surveyors has been engaged by Marick to provide Party Wall, Rights of Light, Schedule of Condition (SoC) surveys to adjoining properties, precautionary SoC of the Public Highway and Neighbourly Matters services on the project.

Headland and RSK

RSK has been engaged by Marick to provide Archaeology consultancy services on the Park Street project and will remain with Marick to monitor and report on the Archaeology investigations. 

Headland (part of the RSK Group) has been engaged by Gilbert-Ash as the specialist Archaeology contractor on the project. Headland drafted and agreed the Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) with the Cambridge City Council. Headland will lead the investigations on site and produce the journal information following the findings.

Headland is a registered Organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) and has been part of the RSK Group since 2019. The company was founded in Edinburgh in 1996. There are 5 + UK offices, with approximately 200 full time staff.

Headland is also an Historic Environment Service Provider recognised by Institute for Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).

RSK has also undertaken all of the ground, environmental water and gas investigations on the site for Marick.

Headland and RSK have a good industry reputation for working on challenging projects such as Park Street.
